The Wolf Review - what the sector has to say

I will get around to publishing my own commentary on the core thrust and arguable upsides and downsides of the Wolf Review in the next few days.

Ironically the final report, which I had been looking forward to delving into for months, ended up being published on the day I was at an all day, non-accredited CPD course for managers, which thankfully was a lively, practically oriented training session that boosted my understanding and my confidence rather than an exercise in 'death by powerpoint'.

It struck me that in my current role in the private sector I have always been given the autonomy by my Directors to make real decisions about the kind of training and professional development I want to pursue, while benefiting from helpful and practical advice when asked.

Briefly I think one of the potentially good things that may come of the Wolf Review is its clear recognition that learners need to be empowered to make positive choices based on real information about the progression opportunities different qualifications and non accredited courses offer. It is absolutetly imperative that as DfE, BIS and the other partners involved in creating the new all age careers service and the online lifelong learning accounts move forward they are genuinely focused on delivering a consumer centred rather than producer oriented architecture.

We need a flexible and easily navigatable architecture to underpin the vocational offer for 16-19 year olds that gives them real insight to the pros and potential cons of the learning routes open to them and genuine power to customise the learning pathways they follow.

As I say I will blog more on the Wolf Review in the next few days, but for now I thought it might be useful for busy readers if I pull together an array of key sector stakeholder submissions to the Wolf Review consultation and responses to the final report for people to peruse.
